Software for Digital AV ...


General Information
There is a vast range of software now available which will allow you to very quickly and easily combine pictures with background sound files. This simple idea of combining photographs with music was referred to as slide/sound or slideshows.

Now the Royal Photographic Society has introduced a new category for those photographers who wish to gain an RPS distinction in this area and have named this type of photography as "Photo Harmony".

The more traditional Audio Visual Sequences require a much deeper use of progression within the show.



Software Available
Software is readily available,and can range from free programs included with new cameras or scanners to very expensive and complicated packages.

The majority of AV workers concentrated on using a handful of programs which are listed here in purely alphabetic order:


GlobFx - a French program, which has now become far less popular as other programs are updated and can produce the more intricate transitions. You will need the GlobFx Composer to create your slideshows and the GlobFx Player to view your finished work.

M.Objects AV Software - A German program which also hosts an active Forum.

Pictures to Exe -
Make the photo slide show with PicturesToExe.
In most AV Festivals and competitions this programme is usually the most widely used at present. It is inexpensive, easy to use and has a very comprehensive and helpful support network, with a large and very active Forum.

Using an Apple Mac
The majority of Av software works by producing a final executeable file which can then be played on any PC. However the Mac computer will not recognise exe files and therefore most MAc users have to work around this problem.


A recent arrival on the AV scene is the French program Lanterne Magique (Magic Lantern). This has been used successfully by Mac users.

Pictures to Exe is my preferred software to create my digital AV sequences.
Although I have tried and tested most of the other software programs I find that the support facilities and above all the quality of its final projected images is far superior to the others. You will therefore find that this web site does give lots of information and support for this software.

However if you have found that you have started to create your sequences / diaporamas with other software and you are happy with it, you should continue to create and learn.

We are fortunate that there are now many web sites where you can download and view the work of International "diaporamists" or AV workers. Enjoy the experience.

At the end of the day it is the quality of the finished product which is important not the tools which created it.

We do not judge a photograph by its camera but rather by the seeing eye of the photographer.
